Pedigree Analysis & Progeny Description

Dun-Did breeding is special and rare these days, and Harry Weier seemed to bring it all together when he mated his massive deep-bodied, dairy, wide-rumped 94 point Advent daughter with Deep-Valley Contender-Red.

Redcloud-Red is a bull with a near faultless physique and the ability to transmit the same. The first crop of daughters are a consistent group. They exhibit width that begins with the muzzle and travels to the pins. Not only are their frames ideal; their mammary systems display width, height, good attachments and ideal teat placement. We recommend using Redcloud on dairy cattle with good production that need a boost in butterfat.

Redcloud has struggled with semen production in the last few years, making his price elevated a bit. If you need a bull who can consistently bring width, strength and openness to the mating, along with nice udders and good butterfat, Redcloud may be the bull for you.

* What is 305-AA?

305-AA is the standardized milk, fat, and protein yield estimate used by CDCB to compare cows of different ages, parities, breeds, and regions on equal footing. According to CDCB and USDA AGIL, it represents “a 305-day lactation record at 36 months of age” — hence “Average Age,” or AA.

It replaced 305-ME (Mature Equivalent) in June 2024 for published records and was implemented in the calculation of CDCB genetic evaluations effective August 13, 2024. ME had been the standard since 1935.

How it is calculated
The new factors are applied as a series of separate multipliers for age-parity, season, previous days open, and milking frequency. Lactation records are adjusted upward or downward to what the cow would have been expected to produce as a 36-month-old, milked twice daily for 305 days.

Key adjustments include:

  • Age-parity: Standardized to 36 months rather than ME’s mature range of 61–86 months depending on breed.
  • Season/climate: Seasonal effects are now estimated within five regions defined by the average climate zone scores for each state, replacing the old three east-to-west geographic regions.
  • Milking frequency: Still standardized to 2x milking, unchanged from ME.
  • Previous days open: The methodology for this adjustment is also unchanged from ME.
